Connection Speeds

I read a very interesting article about connection speeds across the globe yesterday. I believe that the faster the speeds, the more we enable innovation, learning and the economy. South Korea is certainly ahead in the race right now. This is worth a read for anyone that is interested in how the United States stacks up.

Google Announces First Fiber Community
October 21, 2010, 12:10 pm

The fall is here and the results are starting to come in on the Google Fiber Initiative. Not surprisingly, Google’s first community is very close to home, literally only a couple of miles away. Stanford University’s residential subdivision will be the first test of the high speed network. This does not rule out Asheville for a future location for a Google network presence. There will be more communities selected in the coming months, so stay tuned!

You can read the full post on Google’s blog here.

While you all have been busy filling out the community response individually, the city has also been hard at work for the municipal response. This video seeks to capture essence of Asheville’s independent spirit while conveying the vital information Google needs to know about our Technology assets and creative ability to innovate applications. This video will accompany the municipal response from the City of Asheville to Google. A big thank you goes out to Ben Teague of the Asheville Chamber of Commerce and Casablanca Digital Media for putting this together.

Fighting Cancer with Google Fiber in Asheville

A new video has been posted by a doctor here in Asheville, Quinten Black, talking about how Google could help Asheville provide better cancer care. This is a great piece showing some of the benefits from the strong medical community here in Asheville. Superb artwork by Brennan McElhaney to make this a very clean message.

Letter to Google from United States Congressman Heath Shuler

Congress of the United States
House of Representatives
Washington, DC 20515-3311

Dear Google Representatives,

It has never been more true, than it is today, that data is where rubber meets the road in today’s economy.  No one understands this better than Google.  As this data giant in the technology world embarks on an ambitious experiment to test ultra-high speed networks in selected trial locations across the country I wanted to share a few thoughts on why I believe Asheville, NC would be an excellent municipality to use as a test location.

We are a fast paced community in the most beautiful region in the entire country.  Asheville and the surrounding area continues to attract the best and brightest from across the world to live here, vacation here and to live out their retirement dreams.  If Asheville were to be awarded this initiative we could share with the rest of the nation the innovation that takes place here daily.

The Asheville area is home to a number of excellent colleges and universities churning out bright, talented students, who we would like to employ within the area from graduation through their prime earning years.  Asheville is also home ot the National Climatic Data Center, which houses the world’s largest repository of climate data.  The ability to deliver this data all over the world using Google’s technology would not just benefit Western North Carolina but the world as we continue to struggle globally with climate issues.

Asheville has the entrepreneurs, innovators, data and foundation to rapidly deploy and test Google’s desire to learn what we can innovate using gigabit speeds to the home.  For these reasons, as well as many others, I am asking Google to consider Asheville and Western North Carolina for this initiative.  Our communities are ready to work with you to foster this innovation quickly.

If I can be of any further assistance to you or provide you with additional information on the Western North Carolina community, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Heath Shuler
MEMBER OF CONGRESS

11th District, North Carolina

Tech Now video

AdvantageWest and Meet The Geeks released a video last year that speaks to some of the technology innovation in Western North Carolina. It just goes to show that Asheville has been ready and thinking about the future of this region, moving technology and innovation forward.
